One of the most poplar television shows in the 1990s was Star Trek: The New Generation. A favorite character was Data. He was a highly developed android; a computer with human form and computing powers at least equal to the brightest human. One episode had an admiral in charge of Federation Research and Development wanting to remove Data from the Enterprise and take him back to Headquarters for study. His argument was that Data was Federation property and the admiral had every right to remove Federation property from the ship for just cause. Captain Picard didnt want his Second Officer taken off to be tinkered with and argued that Data was not property but a person. According to futurists, this scenario isnt that far in the future.
